1970 : Porsche 917 K David Piper (nº18)






David Piper presents for the 24 hours 1970 his own Porsche 917 chassis number 010. Before testing, he is approached by Aarnio Wihuri, stepfather of Jochen Rindt, VW/Porsche importer in Finland who is looking for a driver to assist Gijs Van Lennep whose teammate Hans Laine killed himself a few weeks earlier at the Nürburgring. An agreement is reached with Piper who will drive and enter instead of his car, the yellow and red 917 (chassis n°021) of the AAW team. Devoid of any aerodynamic appendage, 021 will nevertheless be noticed because it will be the only 917 equipped with a mirror on the roof.

Qualified in 11th position with a very correct time of 3'29"4, Gijs Van Lennep found the first hour in a flattering 5th place. control of his car under the Dunlop bridge.Shared on the 14th position, 021 regains two places before 0:26 am, Gijs Van Lennep pulls into the Hunaudières and does not give up definitively.

Very seriously damaged, 021 will be rebuilt with chassis 012 and will take the unofficial name of 012/021. Other elements of 021 were used for the assembly on a new frame of the spider 917/021/1.
